One thing that makes St. Martin of Tours School different from others is our commitment to strengthen and build on the artistic success of our students. Through our band and chorus programs to our recent foray into the theatre arts, we pride ourselves on valuing the love of the arts, which makes each student a more well rounded individual as they grow.
A success we have had for many years is our Graphic and Studio Arts programing. Each student has weekly art classes where our wonderful STM teachers guide students to use creativity to expand their imagination, learn art techniques, infuse art history. and nurture self confidence through their expressive, beautiful art! Our art teachers introduce students to a variety of materials such as collage, clay, painting, sculpture, oil and chalk pastels and more.
Our two teachers who work with all 9 grades come from ArtHouse Studio, a contracted non-profit whose programing shows StM students how to use the power of creativity and imagination to show their potential as innovative thinkers. Below enjoy samples our our student’s works, and click here to meet our teachers.
MEET OUR TEACHERS
Janet Berkeley has degrees in Political Science and worked in public libraries for many years. She switched careers and did some substitute teaching, but wanted to focus on teaching art. She is a massive fan of Liverpool Football Club, and compiles and presents a trivia quiz twice a week. Mrs. Berkeley feels fortunate to have taught at STM for 9 years. She loves introducing students to famous works of art, and having them use different mediums and techniques. She continues to be amazed by the work that the students produce, and has enjoyed watching their skills develop over the years. She loves the infectious joy of the students, and appreciates the fabulous, supportive STM staff.
Theresa Knight, born and raised in Sunnyvale, graduated from Archbishop Mitty and earned a degree in Child Development with a bachelor's in Art from CSU Monterey Bay. With over 16 years of experience in fostering creativity and artistic expression in students, she specializes in watercolor painting and believes that art is a vital part of education that helps develop critical thinking and emotional intelligence. Theresa loves to draw and paint and garden. She likes to think she's an avid skier and knows she's an average baker, but enjoys baking anyway! Theresa lives with her husband and their teenage son, and when she has spare time, she always spends it with her dog, Toby!
